log 1: (9/10) this should be everyone’s first pikmin game by law, am i the only one who sees that?
with three captains and the iconic ‘go here’ mechanic, managing time has never felt this good in the whole series. this also has BY FAR the best bosses in the whole series, gameplay-wise and musically they are practically perfect.
yeah, the compelling story doesn’t quite to live up to the first game, it’s kinda piss easy and i am not the biggest fan of the more linear structure but it’s an great replayable time nonetheless that everyone and their grandma should play. 👍
log 2: (9.5/10) ok this game has things going against it to stand a chance to the first game but there are so many things about this game that just can’t be topped! the bosses are INSANE! the music is phenomenal and has never been topped in the whole series! multi-tasking is unbelievably fun! the atmosphere is lovely, especially when it rains OH MY GOD MY HEART! while not as compelling as the first game, the story and characters are solid in their own way, especially since they actually TRY to have stakes to the story, especially ESPECIALLY since they have a hunger system to add a bit of motivation and urgency into the mix. the extra content is also simply spectacular and are really fun to explore!
all this game needed was a more focused story, but otherwise… IT SLAPS!!
CHRIST this game is fun! maybe the depth perception in 3D world isn’t that good but that’s about it, on top of the air movement being a little slippery but that’s about it. they don’t come close to ruining this content-rich masterpiece!
3D world is still an absolute banger, made better with the insane amount of improvements made in this port. ground control feels incredible! grounded movement is tight and razor sharp, yet controls smooth as butter. it makes every single level an absolute thrill! on top of that, you have basically every move you can name. the addition of a run button is also the cherry on the cake, it makes the game consistently brisk-paced on top of the amount of moves you can pull of. speaking up, every level is super fun and tightly made. the design is linear, but explorative! it almost reminds me of sonic adventure in the sense that it’s a joy to explore every area for secret items and truly appreciate them, it’s awesome! the bosses are creative and fun, the soundtrack goes CRAZY, the fact that this is currently the only 3D mario game to have full-on multiplayer is nuts, the multiple characters offer great variety, this game is a gem!
AND I HAVEN’T TALKED ABOUT BOWSER’S FURY! it may be short, but from start to finish, no notes are missed! the open world is so much fun to explore, the controls and music are some of the best in any mario game, the open-world design is downright perfect, the sense of urgency and tension hits the spot and the fury bowser fights are some of the best in the mario franchise! it also feels like such a natural evolution of mario odyssey. the platforming is much more pronounced and focused, the open-world is structured far more compellingly and the main collectibles actually feel rewarding to collect! not to mention… playable bowser jr, need i say more?
no sugar-coats, this is one of my favourite mario games of all time!
the fact that IGN rated this a SEVEN, A LOWER SCORE THAN IMAGINE: PARTY BABYZ, is ***ing ASININE!!
this game bangs! i’m not the biggest fan of this genre but this game takes it to a whole new level!
we got two open worlds to f*** around in (as well as four other dlc worlds), an absurd amount of mutations to mess around with (i wouldn’t be surprised if the count surpassed 100), even MORE goat trophies to collect in each area and tons of achievements so there is always something to do! i also love that the dlc worlds have some sort of linear-ish main quest/s to do if you want and every world is HUGE and filled with secrets packed within the impressively tight open-world design! i cannot overstate that by the way, the large scale of these worlds feel earned because of how perfectly crafted and extremely well-detailed they are! it makes the sense of discovery and wonder basically endless as you practically never come close to find it all in just a handful of playthroughs!
easily the best aspect of this game is the mechanics to the point where it deserves it’s own section! there is something so charming and fun about this game’s intentionally unpolished mechanics. in fact, if it were perfectly polished and smooth, it would be nearly as much fun as it is! the broken mutator abilities, head-butting, licking, kicking and don’t even get me STARTED on the godlike ragdoll physics! when animate entities go limb, they become stretchy rubber bands that are prone to being dragged all around the place, i love how broken it is! the amount of glitches to discover feels like a FEATURE as it’s a core part to this game’s identity.
can’t call this game perfect. goatZ is really fun until you realize the amount of tiny food you are given is bullsh!t, those smug pieces of sh!t that permanently steal your weapons are can also indescribably OBNOXIOUS!! the flappy goat achievement is unfathomably obnoxious, it can go die! there are also plenty of mutations that aren’t very fun to use.
despite all that, this game is an epic masterpiece and you can’t convince me otherwise.
neat package! it has it’s issues; smb3 and smb2 feel a bit looser and some of the music isn’t as good but it’s pretty awesome overall for it’s value!
-having a save system is a massive improvement, it made smb2 and especially the lost levels MUCH more enjoyable.
-the physics in smb1/1.5 are a lot better, i don’t know what it is but they just kinda feel much more fluid to play.
-the pixel art has aged like fine wine! these are some of the best looking 2D mario games because of how much their art styles POP with the better detail and warmer colours.
not much else to say, this is pretty damn solid! 👌
10
ok, this is pretty conflicting. despite the rating, i do have to admit that this game is a little flawed.
-the areas could’ve been tightened up a bit. the wider design makes this game noticeably slower-paced than the others.
-oatchi is ridiculously overpowered! he kinda defeats the purpose of ‘PIKMIN’ so i wouldn’t mind if they got rid of him.
-the music lacks the delicate energy from the previous games and is kinda boring.
-not that this really matters too much, but the story is pretty lacking. i don’t think the characters are that bad. hell, i am all for a larger cast. they aren’t just nearly as charming as the previous games’. i kinda especially wished that you could bring them along to day expeditions.
-the lack of respawning enemies is really lame.
-there is literally zero urgency.
-the flarlic system makes the game a lot harder to multitask which hinders replayability.
-they bring back power-ups which also hinders replayability.
-i wish you could toggle auto-lock. it’s useful for piles but it can get in the way sometimes.
-co-op sucks!
-they kinda ruined swarming a little bit. you can’t move the camera while doing it and you get it at the very end of the game.
-i wish the night system was integrated in a much more compelling way.
that is quite a lot. however, the deeper level design, content, dungeons, presentation, piklopedia, mechanics, gameplay, structure, louie, JUST… everything else about this game is absolutely perfect!! as broken as he is, i do like oatchi! it’s so charming to have such a unique second captain, multitasking with him especially is immensely satisfying! the tower defence night levels are also my jam, they’re fun! that final boss is an absolute, all-time classic! once you get all of your abilities, the dandori challenges are super addicting! also, since its a bit more trickier to multitask, that makes doing so immensely rewarding and satisfying!
this game blew my goddamn mind! it might just be my favourite switch game of all time!
is this rusty thing that really a masterpiece???
…
yes, it is. ya’ll are just mean.
sure, the camera has aged and kinda ruin several stars but there is something so special about this game that is hard to overstate.
this game is just pure joy from beginning to end, a magical experience.
the worlds are filled with so much exploration and wonder that i can’t get enough of, the graphics play a good part too. i have always loved the old polygonal graphics of the N64 days and this is no exception. the music is so freaking lovely and adds so much more to the joy factor, hell, it IS the joy factor. i seriously can’t imagine this game without its iconic soundtrack.
putting the psychological aspects aside, this game is insanely good for a reason. mario’s movement and controls feel great and the structure and pacing in this game are shockingly spectacular! what makes this game so fun to come back to is the perfect structure! once you complete bob-omb battle field, you are pretty much set to go into levels and collect the power stars in any order you desire. this basically means you can DODGE the sh!tty stars if you want to, it’s genius! it adds so much appeal and accessibility to this game, not to mention how MIND-BLOWING it is considering this is for quite literally the first of its kind! you can tell the devs had a blast with this game’s development and that is awesome! the star hints, bullsh!t or not, are insanely charming. simply collecting stars is insanely satisfying and rewarding. the bosses, puzzles, little details, secrets, just everything is such a joy and it makes collecting every star feel so rewarding!
the bowser levels are especially a ton of fun! they are so well designed and atmospheric!
i want to thank this game for single-handedly getting me fully engrossed in the mario series, this made me thrilled to explore so much more from these games after being disinterested for the longest time. it’s pretty jank but it’s what makes this game all the more special.
this game is good and all, the community levels are significantly better due the amount of new editions to the maker is incredible.
however, this has got to be he most disappointing switch game for me because of the maker itself. you know, the MAIN APPEAL OF THE GAME. IT SUCKS! what have they done!? the switch in handheld mode is virtually almost the exact same as the gamepad! how did they mess this up so bad!?
-the joystick controls a clunky cursor instead of mario/camera scroll.
-the fast dropdown menu of items has been replaced by a slow and confusing side-scrolling circle menu.
-the side-buttons from the original editor are now dropdown menus that overlap with the level grid, therefore get in the way.
-they removed the shake gesture to quickly change modes on an item. you have to awkwardly hold-tap them now.
-the item bar is now a dropdown menu that can close, so throwing away items is harder than it should be.
-moving your finger around the draggy glass screen isn’t a smooth experience at all.
-they removed amiibo functionality! that was such a fun feature in the first game, why remove it!?
they even omitted the 100 mario challenge, why??? the online levels are so much better in this game, they had no reason to remove it!
i also didn’t make it far in the main campaign as a found it kinda dull and boring. if i wanted to play a 2D mario where i play through a bunch of pre-made levels, i’d just play mario 3.
i don’t get why this is such a highly acclaimed switch game when the main hook of the game leaves this much to be desired! it’s sad because this game has so much more going for it than the first game, it’s just not fun to make levels. yeah, the community levels are cool but i don’t just play this games to play the levels, i primarily play it to CREATE levels! and if you can’t get that part right in a MARIO ->MAKER<- game, then you’ve failed, i’m sorry! had it replicate the original editor controls and it would’ve been one of the best mario games ever made!
one of my fondest experiences on the wii u.
sure, there was no dynamic verification system for online levels so the majority of them were cheesy garbage but not only was it fun to try community levels online, the titular ‘maker’ is OUTSTANDING! making levels feels so fluid and fast because of the ui, controls and the gamepad itself. the addition of amiibo functionality is such a charming touch and the mario paint-like presentation is inspired!
i don’t really know what else to add, this game is a gem!
still the closest to perfection the 2D games have ever gotten. it’s a 9/10!
…
ok that’s a bit sad.
yeah that is super high for a game but for the BEST in the 2D SONIC series it had every right to be a 10.
i am not going to complain about the story because literally nobody plays classic sonic for the story, neither the fact that every world isn’t original because that doesn’t matter considering all of the worlds are bangers. it’s perfect for what it is. it’s just that the gameplay loop, while perfected in this one, doesn’t click with me enough to justify a 10/10. the platforming is admittedly very simplistic control-wise and isn’t nearly as engaging and/or fun as something like mario bros. 3’s deeper design and innovation. not to mention, 100%ing the game with every character like i did REALLY hurts replayability. like when i’ve fully experienced these super memorable levels so many times already, replaying it can feel pretty redundant. that is the one line i have when considering a 10/10 score. if i find it hard to come back to a game for whatever reason, then i can’t quite call it one of my favourites of all time.
with all of that being said though, this is one of the greatest sonic games for all of the right reasons. the presentation is some of the best i have seen in gaming, the music is some of the best i’ve ever LISTENED TO in gaming, the gameplay is fast and electric, the exploration is tight, the level design in general is so perfect for this game’s control scheme, the graphics are absolutely stunning, every character is fun and unique, the special stages are godlike in every aspect, the pacing is great, the content is solid, it’s truly something special!
imagine mario party 9, but with uninspired presentation, more bullsh!t additions, far less minigames, far less boards, far less everything, and you got this game right here.
i enjoy this game enough, i’m nostalgic for it, but i gotta admit that it’s a bad game. it just doesn’t work nearly as well as 9 did which was already pretty shaky. the music isn’t even close to as good, the bowser mode is really unfun for the opposing players, the boards are aesthetically really basic, the bosses aren’t as interesting, i dunnoooo it kinda exists. like i don’t have the slightest reason to come back to it, especially because of how hard superstars blows it out of the water.
damn people really sleep on this game, it’s GOOD! like, DAMN good! easily my favourite way to experience mario 1.
the biggest improvement i noticed right of the bat was the controls, they’re SO MUCH BETTER! you build up speed and slow down a lot quicker which makes air control much tighter. i cared to adapt to the controls this time around because it didn’t feel completely stiff! you can even go backwards a little bit. however, the solid gameplay is just scratching the surface!
for a gameboy color game, the presentation is actually phenomenal! like, this game is JAM-PACKED with content and improvements that make this game feel like the true predecessor of mario 3 and world!
-there is a level select.
-they turned the classic live display before each level into a small shippable cutscene of mario walking to each level.
-you vs boo is a mode where you race boo through altered levels with a unique switch system that constantly changes the level design, they’re really fun. there’s even a multiplayer mode!
-challenge mode is the base game levels, except with red coins and yoshi eggs to collect.
-there are achievements in this which is pretty sick!
-along with the first game, you can also play the base game of the lost levels! and it’s enjoyable! the level design is still kinda rough but they removed world’s 9 though D, tightened some of the stupid jumps and wind is GONE!
-you can edit the boot screen which can be pretty humorous.
i am amazed at how much love and care was put into this remake, but it’s far from perfect. of course there is the infamous screen crunch, i personally don’t mind it but it can be an issue a lot of the time. the controls are still kinda stiff and slippery, mario still feels too heavy, i still don’t like the lost levels and some achievements are a little annoying, killing bowser with fireballs in world 7 is especially absurd!
this game is awesome, i had a fun time! not better than mario 3 though, come the *** on IGN.
look, i know this game is over 30 years old and i am not one to get pissed at old @ss games. hell if you know me, i’m quite the video game optimist!
…
but… 8.5/10?????? IGN, ARE YOU ACTUALLY HIGH!? YOU LEGIT THINK MARIO 3D WORLD + BOWSER’S FURY AND LUIGI’S MANSION ARE WEAKER THAN THIS!?!?!? PIKMIN, TOO!?!?!?!? I-… !?!?!!?BFKHVBDFIVFDHGKJRHSOhfebrjkgretknjbjefrkkjndsfrejgkbrejhkgtueiojeola78362Y4EGRTBFHKIRTYEUKHJTGFSDBKETdxvjkdfkjvhdfjhsidhiudshgiusdhgiuvhnvuiJHDFKDFJEHJKFREHHTKKBHBGMWEIOREOEW©˙˙∆©¥´∑¢´®†¥¥¶ª•¨øˆ∆˙ˆ∫©√ç≈ß∑£¢´∞®§†©˙˜∫˚√ƒç∂®
THIS GAME IS A NIGHTMARE!
it’s definately a playable and beatable game, but it’s one of the most unfair and painful games i have ever tried out!
so what if there are harder games out there!? at least they are FUN and FAIR and SATISFYING! THIS GAME IS HELL!!
it’s a garbage sequel. it does nothing different or cohesive to stand out from the first game and it’s just boring! they did nothing to improve the visuals and controls! the level design is so piss-poor and bullshit! did mario maker players travel back in time to make this!?
sure, its probably unfair to rate a game i haven’t finished but this is one of those very special exceptions!
i think we all owe the real mario 2 an apology! “oOooh! It’S A sHiTtY reSKiN oF dOki DoKI paNiC! 🤓🤓🤓“ SHUT UP! that was created as a TECH DEMO for mario 2! people say that mario bros 2 US isn’t unique when you can say the SAME THING about this game! also the US mario bros 2 is a banger! it shouldn’t even be remotely compared to this travesty! if it wasn’t for checkpoints, continues and the mystical vibe this game gives off, it would probably be one of the easiest 1/10s i’ve ever given anything!
who cares if this game is 38 years old, therefore is too old to bash nowadays! E.T FOR ATARI IS 42 YEARS OLD!!!
👏NUFF! 👏SAID!
…
…
still somehow better than hello neighbor, though. great work! 😀👍
the only reason this isn’t a 1/10 is because the presentation is nice and ‘free’ is such a good song.
for one of the worst games i’ve ever touched, i surprisingly don’t feel a ton of hatred for this game. mainly because everything except for the controls and story is pretty solid! the graphics are nice, the mechanics are cool and interesting and the high-percussion music slaps hard!
what drags this game to its grave are the controls. got nothing else to say there because i’m pretty sure having to control a racing game with your whole body is quite self-explanatory, it absolutely blows. the story is also pretty unremarkable, especially in comparison to the first two games that had actual cutscenes. amy especially is INSUFFERABLE in this game like good lord, this is the only game in the series where i actively wanted to dropkick her!
got nothing else to add about this game, no one should ever feel the need to play this garbage.
it’s kinda crazy that this game technically isn’t as bad as games like sonic boom: rise of lyric and i want to rank this over hello neighbor so badly, yet i cannot because of the control scheme it forces upon you. it’s quite an impressive f**k up.
the PERFECT comfort game! i sh*t you not, i could NOT put my damn controller down throughout my entire playthrough! i was so hooked that i spent the whole night beating the whole game! there is just something about this game that is so special. the atmosphere is immaculate, particularly due to the outdated graphics and eerie lighting enhancing the spookiness. the gameplay also aged like fine wine and has a nice difficulty to it. the characters are fun, the bosses are great, the soundtrack slaps, the mansion itself is so cool, the structure keeps things fresh, this game is so damn iconic!
however, at the center of it all is luigi himself. i got so invested in his quest to save mario and the epitome of that is the game boy horror. you can scan almost every object in this game to get luigi’s thoughts on them and oh my god it’s so adorable! it’s crazy how much they flesh out luigi’s character and personality, it’s almost like the piklopedia in pikmin 2! this solidified luigi as my second favorite video game protagonist, it’s literally impossible to not love luigi after playing this!
while it doesn’t quite reach the heights of mainline mario for me, it is a consistently fun time that i’ll always love!
ah… i have finally come around on this game. it’s truly something special, it’s just flawed as all.
this is one of the most charming games i have ever played! the graphics are charming, the music is charming, the sound effects are charming, the piklopedia is SUPER charming, the pikmin make little noises and sing and that’s charming. it’s charm overload!
on top of that, the gameplay and controls are as fun as ever, purple and white pikmin are welcome inclusions to the franchise, most of the dungeons are fun, the submerged castle in particular is horrifying and incredible, the graphics and cutscenes are beautiful for 2004, OLIMAR IS STILL A PERFECT MAN, the game innovates so much from the first game that it blows my mind, it’s such a great sequel!
however, what stops it from being perfect are the aspects that made the first game special.
the game lacks motivation. there is zero urgency for the majority of the game due to the lack of a time limit and the fact that going inside dungeons, the areas you will be spending the most time on stops time completely. the pacing isn’t very good, too much time in this game is spent in the dungeons when the overworlds are more fun and interesting. the story is kinda lame and isn’t even close to as good. the random generation with the dungeons is pretty mediocre, especially with the enemy and treasure placement. the balance in this game is kinda awful, purple pikmin are so overpowered that red pikmin are next to useless, the purple spray is also insane and the difficulty constantly goes from stupidly easy to nightmarishly unfair with very few in-betweens. the hazards are the worst and the dungeons get more and more bullish!t as you progress!
yeah, the game isn’t perfect. however, there is never a dull moment to be found in this game. i am never bored playing this game. even the stupid difficulty is kinda charming in its own right.
this is definitely one of my favourite comfort winter games and one of my favourites in general. :)
a cute, fun, undeniable classic worth trying out but a 9/10???? really, IGN???? YOU THINK THIS GAME IS A CLOSE SECOND TO MARIO 3!? HUH!?
look, i understand this game saved gaming as a whole but in terms of the game itself nowadays, it hasn’t aged the greatest.
the controls don’t feel very good. mario’s momentum is ok but his air control is awful, it feels absurdly stiff! not to mention how heavy he feels when big. the level design is pretty alright, but can be a bit frustrating at times. i especially CANNOT understand IGN’s point about this game “encouraging exploration” because… you can’t! you can’t go backwards or retry levels. i guess the cool secrets are neat and add “replay value”, but i don’t want to have to retry the whole game again just to see what’s in a block that was just a pixel too far off the screen for me to reach!
i am not going to question any of its flaws because that is unfair and stupid but said flaws are aspects that simply haven’t aged well.
this game is ok, nuff said.
this game is seriously amazing yet sooooo frustrating because of how close to perfection it is! it had everything in place to be easily the truly monumental entry in the series!
on one hand, the gameplay is incredible! the fighting gameplay is intense and fun, the fact that you do real-time hand signs to perform jutsu is so cool, running around takes a bit to get the hang of but when you do you feel ALIVE, even the minigames feel so good to control and DAMN the amount of cool mechanics you can do in this fun open-world is simply awe inspiring! on top of that, the environments, skyboxes and colours are GORGEOUS and oozes xbox 360 times all in your face! it also uses music from the anime and that’s EPIC.
it’s truly a fantastic time!
however, on the other hand, it excels very poorly in story and presesentation. the main story is solid in a vacuum but i will never understand why it’s so weirdly rushed and half-baked for the sake of nonsensical filler, it makes zero sense! the ratio filler has over the main plot is OBSCENE and wouldn’t have needed to be there if ubisoft cared to flesh out the main story enough! despite the pretty environments, the presentation is quite miserable. the UI feels so empty and lifeless, character models are so stiff, broken and sometimes disproportionate, like HOW DO YOU MESS UP NARUTO’S FACE THAT BADLY!? oh and don’t even get me started on the sannin QTE sequence, like what the ACTUAL F*** happened here!? were they even trying!? most significantly though, the fighting gameplay, while fun, doesn’t come close to recapturing the monumental choreography from the anime. it honestly feels like the characters aren’t trying that hard which just feels wrong!
the great gameplay keeps this game from being unfun or boring, but these flaws frustrate me beyond everything because i can easily picture the masterpiece it was so damn close to being! with that said it is easily my favourite naruto game. i highly recommend this game for its stellar gameplay.
ok i do have to admit that this game is definitely flawed.
the automated camera with some enemies can be annoying, there are way too many 2D segments in chaos island, they STILL didn’t bring back the rail-balancing mechanics so some parts feel a little automated, using the homing attack on enemies can feel a little stiff, the light-speed dash is also pretty stiff, not all cyberspace levels are very good, the unskippable mini-cutscenes can get monotonous and the amount of references to previous sonic games gets pretty excessive over time.
however, despite all of that, i cannot understate how much fun i truly had with this game.
this is the best story we’ve gotten in a while. the characters are loveable again, the story has stakes and tries to take itself seriously once more, it’s about damn time we’ve got a story like this! the gameplay is also great. the game truly makes you feel like sonic as you blast through the mostly really fun and well-designed open zones. at some points, i felt like i was sonic in the sonic cd opening, that’s how exhilarating it feels! on top of that, the structure is also pretty neat and interesting, the cyberspace levels are really fun, the combat is killer and the jukebox system is a genius feature! if i had to name my favourite part of the game, you better ***ing BELIEVE it’s the insanely epic boss battles! it’s such a thrill to finally bring back super sonic fighting a big scary demon with a sick rock song playing in the background! it’s truly fun. and the MUSIC, OH MY GOD!! did not expect them to throw out heavy metal screaming but WOW it’s so good!
i don’t know what else there is to say, this game rocks!
wow! this game is joyride, i’m impressed!
the presentation is infamously superb! the art style and graphics are gorgeous, each location feels so alive and the music bangs hard! (bout’ the city, easy top 10 SEGA songs! it gives me power!) i also feel that the gameplay gets pretty slept on in this. the momentum-based rollerblading, rail-grinding and jump mechanics are great! they do a solid job at making you feel like a badass, it’s fun to simply skate around aimlessly. the sick graffiti QTEs are fun too. the open-world design is also really fluid with my favourite location definitely being shibuya-cho because each section is a blast to roam around in, rolling down the sloped section at the speed of sound is especially gratifying! the plot is also nuts! it’s literally about gang of teenagers whose opps are a CORPORATION who have ridiculous beef with these kids to the point that they go as far as using ***ING TANKS to murder them! i absolutely love it! onishima is also the biggest opp i’ve ever seen in a video game like JESUS CHIST he want you DEAD! also professor k he’s the best!
this made for a unique experience i enjoyed greatly.
this game has it’s flaws, though. i kinda wish you went a bit faster and the big issue with the controls is turning. it feels perfectly good when going at neutral speeds, but is really stiff when going really slow or fast.
the enemy system is a bit of a headache, too. at first, they’re welcome. that is until you get to the last few levels where things get a bit annoying. they are AGGRESSIVE in these levels and since most of them are unkillable, they tend to get on my nerves. the great structure DOES save it, though.
the main campaign is also short, and i mean really, REALLY short. if you know what you are doing, you can beat this game in like 3 hours. it was a bit disappointing considering how epic the plot is, but at least it makes the game super replayable.
this game is pretty awesome! can’t wait to play future when i get the chance!
